WebTrenching is a method of investigating lateral subsurface flow processes where soil is excavated from the surface to a certain depth and lateral flow is monitored in a cross section of the hillslope which has a long history in hydrology (Whipkey, 1965 ). Soils can be classified as Type A, Type B, or Type C. Type A soil is the most stable soil in which to excavate. Type C is the least stable soil.
